Emergence of Clea May
Clea May, artist and songwriter, was born in London, and raised in Brighton. Her music is best described as modern trip-hop, as she fuses elements of soul, electronic, hip-hop, tribal, spoken word, d’n’b and pop to create unique but captivating music. Clea has been likened to Massive Attack, Portishead, Billie Eilish and Sade, whilst carrying her own distinct sound throughout her tracks with her rich voice and production style.
Clea first discovered her love for music through family friend and artist Lola Young, who introduced her to songwriting at the age of 10. Immersing herself in this creative outlet, she turned to music as her way of processing the world around her.
“I wasn’t able to express myself the way I needed to. I ended up feeling as though I was being put into a box again, even if it was now in a creative field”.
After completing a year of music college and achieving a distinction star, Clea made the decision to move on from the course.
Shortly after making this decision, the blue print of her first EP ‘Hummingbird’ started to take form, confirming that trusting her own individual path is what allows her to thrive. The courage to go against the grain and follow her own intuition is also reflected in her music.
Clea’s ability to reach into the unknown and create a modern, rich and soulful sound is set to carve a new direction for UK music.
